Introducing: Mr Nathaniel Schmidt - Piano

Nathaniel Schmidt has been involved in music for the majority of his life thus far.  Although not initially determined to pursue a musical career, he is now fully committed to making a go of it in one way or another.

Growing up in Courtenay British Columbia on Vancouver Island, Nathaniel's education began with piano lessons and participation in school band.  Along with this, he also enjoyed forming and playing in various rock bands with friends and schoolmates throughout high school. Nathaniel decided to continue educating himself by applying for the piano performance degree at the University of Lethbridge.  Four years later and Nathaniel is the proud owner of a bachelor's degree in piano performance and is attempting to “make a go of it” as a freelance musician in Calgary and the surrounding areas.  This includes teaching, accompanying, performing, and composing. As a student at university, he played two solo concerts featuring music from all periods, including the premieres of many new pieces by local and modern composers.  In addition to this, Nathaniel was the school's opera accompanist and a sought after accompanist, which led to many more performing opportunities.  He has had many enriching masterclasses and lessons with experienced teachers from across Canada.  Other activities at university included the completion up to the 3rd year of a composition degree, something that led to the premiere of his composition “Piece for Small Ensemble” at a faculty concert hosted by the university. As a teacher, Nathaniel is open to guiding students in a way that best suits their musical needs.  A strong background in understanding harmony, melody, and rhythm are essential along with ensuring that the student is engaged with and enjoying the material being presented to him or her.  As a musician who has had to work constantly at  and think about each step of his own learning, Nathaniel feels that he is in a strong position to understand and connect with all the different struggles students may be presented with.
